Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18, 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to a mother of white and black parents. She grew up on her mom's side. She said that the color of her skin was a reason she felt rejected by her peers as an infant. Their family was struggling financially. They were always on the move and moved 16 times to assist her father's career. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there was always a chance for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet and later to become a painter. Russell was just 18 when she started her first acting class. She used her savings from work to purchase a car and then drove to Los Angeles, to audition. When the money ran out she returned to work until she had enough money to make another attempt at auditioning. She continued this routine for four years, until she received her first TV part.
